The Visual Arts Program at St. Mary's County Public Schools has a long standing tradition of offering outstanding programs and opportunities in the visual arts. We provide a curricula that challenges students to think about and respond to themselves and their experiences in creative and innovative ways. Our teacher-artists guide students to an understanding of the arts as a means of personal expression in our daily lives.
The Visual Arts program at SMCPS develops a young artist's technical abilities and personal vision through the study of a variety of traditional and contemporary media. Creative problem solving, critical thinking and a broad range of experiences build the foundation for deeper understanding, advanced learning, and innovation within the various media. The curricula encourages divergent thinking and creative exploration, which helps students make sense of our increasingly visual world.
We enjoy a close relationship with arts-based community groups such as Annmarie Gardens, the St. Mary's County Library Association, and the St. Mary's County Arts Council.
The goals for the visual arts program are consistent with the National Standards for Visual Art, as well as the Maryland State Fine Arts Standards.
